The new year has begun and while some people believe it will be the last year we see, automobile companies are choosing to think greener and and out of the box. While there are several new models being launched by almost every automobile manufacturer, most are downsizing either engine capacity, or dropping cylinders altogether in lieu of turbochargers. SO, what does the future have in store for us? Let's take a look ahead at some of the key 2012 models from leading automotive manufacturers.
Above: Shown is the 2012 prototype tester for journalists. The actual 2013 Prius Hybrid may look different.
Toyota
Toyota have a keen eye on the future with more than a few green plans. Apart from introducing the 3rd generation Prius, Toyota have brought in the plug-in hybrid, which allows you to recharge your Prius at your convenience. It allows you to run up to 15 miles on a single charge at 62 mph and has a quick charge time of 3 hours, if you use a standard 120V AC socket. Of course, if you run out of electricity, it will seamlessly switch to hybrid mode. Besides the Prius, Toyota have the new 2012 Camry as well, which gets sharper styling details and some sleek new lines on the outside, while at the same time, incorporating a host of new features for in-cabin communication and entertainment.

Nissan
Nissan on the other hand have introduced the new 2012 GT-R with even more performance on tap. While power goes up to 550 hp, the engineers have been busy tweaking the suspension and handling characteristics to improve it's dynamics even further. On the opposite side of the range, they also bring you the 100% electric Leaf and the rather interesting new crossover, the Juke which bring's in the new design identity. Renault will also introduce their new Twingo with this new design identity.
Ford
Ford has been busy globally, and first up, they have the all new compact crossover the EcoSport which will be powered by 120 hp 1.0L turbocharged 3-cylinder engine featuring gasoline direct injection. An all-new Escape will also debut. The Ranger will also undergo a major styling update and get a couple of new powerplants. Step up a few notches and the all-new Mustang will come in to take the charge at the top with the new motor in the GT500 model pumping out no less than 650 hp!

GM
Not to be left behind, GM have been busy working on a plethora of models across several segments. With the new compact car the Spark, and a slightly larger hot hatchback in the all-new Sonic; they have two new offerings that can continue the charge at the front. And, they also have the mean looking new Camaro in it's convertible form, as well as the even meaner, supercar-humbling 580 hp ZL1!

BMW
BMW will introduce their all-new F30 3-series, which is larger in every way than the outgoing model, offering greater space and even better dynamics. The base 320i will be a turbocharged 184 hp 2.0L four, while the all-new 328i drops two pots and gains the 2.0L four in it's most potent form, 245 hp. This motor will also, for the first time in their history, power the Z4 roadster in sDrive 28i trim. The magnificent new 6-series Gran Coupe is also going to make it's presence felt in the four-door coupe segment that so far Mercedes has dominated with it's CLS and Audi with it's recently introduced A7.

Mercedes
Mercedes continues it's evolution with an all-new SLK, a less brutish M class as well as an all-new SL slated for launch with downsized, more efficient motors. A new C63 AMG Black Series is also available, giving the class, for the first time, the 510 hp of the 6.2L V8 motor, rather than the usual 457.
Chrysler
Chrysler will introduce the new 200 on coupe and convertible forms, featuring their trademark Pentastar engine, as well as their all-new 300 luxury sedan with either the Pentastar V6, or a massive 6.4L HEMI V8 with 363 hp.
Above: Mazda's all new CX-5 debuts in 2012 with their SkyActive technology
Mazda
Mazda on the other hand have been busy incorporating their SkyActiv technology on their models including the 3, 5 and 6, but the highlight will be the all-new CX-5 that debuts with the full quota of SkyActiv features, that give it a blend of efficiency, handling and performance like no other compact SUV on the road.
So then, whether you're looking for the practicality of a compact family hatch or an adrenaline rush from the muscle and sportscar lineups, 2012 is going to be a year to look forward to!

Comment by Nate Dugan on February 11, 2012 at 9:28pm I'm hoping Toyota choses to redesign slightly. The current prius, they used as a prototype is based on the current, which I happen to think of as a hansome, even sleek car. but I'd like to see some desing cues to signal evolution.
Mazda's new CX5 is a big improvement on th eold, and should be popular. I like. The Beemer F30, gorgeous and euro elegant. Mercedes, killer for that crowd. Camaro, killer for me. I love that beast. Not the gas bill, but man to drive. Don't know what to say about the Ford, I love fords, but that's a bit weird looking, but I guess it's good for the mini suv crowd. And what can I say about the GTR. It's the definition of gorgeous and it has the creds to go along. Good work Jim!
